The short written form of 'weight'. You see it on labels, in tables, on shipping papers, in recipes and in catalogues — anywhere space is tight and the reader already knows what number is coming: 'Net wt. 500 g', 'Wt. 2.4 kg'. It is a writing-only short form, so when you read the line out loud you say the whole word, 'weight'. The full stop at the end is there because letters have been cut off the word; British writers often drop it and write 'wt', and either is fine as long as you are consistent. On food packages it almost always appears in a set phrase: 'net wt.' is the weight of the food alone, without the box or bottle, and 'gross wt.' is the weight with the packaging included — a difference worth knowing when you compare prices. It is not used in ordinary sentences; write 'weight' in an essay or a letter.

組成The first and last letters of the word weight (w…t), with a full stop showing the middle has been cut out. This kind of shortening — keep the start and the end, drop the middle — is the same idea behind 'Dr.' for Doctor and 'St.' for Street.
