The short name of a British charity, the Women's Royal Voluntary Service. Its members are volunteers — they give their time and are not paid. The group started in Britain before the Second World War to help ordinary people during the war, and afterwards it kept going, helping people who find it hard to look after themselves: old people, sick people, people alone. The service it is most famous for is Meals on Wheels, where volunteers drive hot meals to the homes of people who cannot cook for themselves. WRVS volunteers also run the little shops and tea counters inside British hospitals, and help patients find their way. In British books, news and TV you meet the name as a picture of quiet, practical kindness, often connected with older women. Two notes on the name. 'Royal' is a title of honour given by the king or queen; it does not mean the royal family runs it. And although the name says 'Women's', men have been able to join for many years now — which is one reason the charity later changed its name to just 'Royal Voluntary Service'. So if you meet WRVS in an older text and RVS in a newer one, they are the same body.
