'Wrongfully' is the adverb of 'wrongful'. It tells you that something was done to a person or , when that person had done nothing to deserve it.
You will nearly always find it in front of a past participle, describing what was done to someone: wrongfully arrested, wrongfully accused, wrongfully convicted, wrongfully dismissed, wrongfully , wrongfully held. 'He was wrongfully accused of stealing' means two things at once — someone accused him, and he did not do it. That hidden second meaning is why the word is so strong. Say it, and you have declared the person innocent.
It belongs to law, news and formal writing. In ordinary conversation people say 'they arrested the wrong man' or 'he got for no reason'.
Be careful with its neighbour ''. 'Wrongly' is the everyday word and covers plain mistakes: 'the form was filled in', 'I assumed she was Japanese'. 'Wrongfully' adds the idea of injustice and usually of law being broken. So a name can be ' spelled' but never 'wrongfully spelled' — nobody's rights were hurt by a spelling. With arrests and accusations, both are possible, and 'wrongfully' is the heavier, more legal choice.
