Short for "the Women's Royal Army Corps." This was the part of the British Army that women joined, from 1949 until 1992. In those years a woman who wanted to be a soldier did not join the ordinary army units — she joined the WRAC, and the WRAC was kept separate, with its own officers and its own kinds of work. In 1992 it was closed, and women went into the regular army units instead, alongside men. So the word belongs to history now: you meet it in books about the war years, in family stories ("my grandmother was in the WRAC"), and on old photographs. British people say the letters, "double-you ar ay see," though some older people say it as one sound, "rack." It takes "the" in front of it. There were sister groups for the other services — the WRAF for the air force and the WRNS for the navy — and all three were folded into the main services in the 1990s.
