A world-weary person is tired of life itself — not tired in the body, but worn down by experience, so that nothing excites or shocks them anymore. They have seen it all before. Their voice is flat, their smile is small, they expect people to disappoint them and they are usually right. You can use it about a person ("a world-weary journalist"), and also about the things a person produces: a world-weary sigh, a world-weary look, a world-weary tone. It works before a noun and after be — "He sounded world-weary." The word belongs mostly to writing: novels, reviews, journalism. It carries a certain style with it. A world-weary character in a film is often cool — the old detective who has stopped believing in happy endings. So the word can feel almost admiring, because it suggests deep experience. But used about a real young person it is closer to a worry: you are saying they have given up on being interested in anything, and that is sad rather than stylish. Don't confuse it with *weary* alone, which just means tired, or with depressed, which is a medical word for an illness. World-weary sits in between: an attitude, not an illness.
