A room set aside for doing work in, especially work with your hands — sewing, painting, repairing, making things. The word carries a strong hint of craft and of the maker's own space: a dressmaker's workroom, an artist's workroom, a spare bedroom at home turned into a workroom. That is the difference from study (a room for reading and writing, quiet, books) and from office (a room for business, desk and computer, usually not at home). A workshop is close, but a workshop is bigger and more serious — tools, machines, often a garage or a separate building, and workshop also means a class where people learn by doing. Workroom is quieter and more domestic than that. In older or larger buildings, workroom can also mean the back room where a team of staff actually make the goods, behind the shop where they are sold. It is not an especially common word in daily conversation; you meet it in stories, in old houses, and among people who sew.
