A workbasket is a basket that holds the things you with — needles, thread, scissors, buttons, a half-mended sock. The "work" in it is an old, narrower use of the word meaning needlework, so a workbasket is not a basket of general tools; it is specifically the basket a person keeps beside their chair. You may also see it written as two words or with a . It is a fairly old-fashioned word today. If you meet it, it is most likely in a novel, where it does quiet work in setting a scene — a woman with a workbasket on her lap tells you a great deal about the time and the room. Modern speakers are more likely to say basket or box. In some offices the word has been borrowed for a tray or a computer list of jobs waiting to be done, but that use is limited and technical.
