A county — one of the areas England is divided into — in the west of the country, with the city of Worcester at its centre. It is green farming land, known for fruit growing and for the hills called the Malverns. Outside Britain, most people meet the name in one place only: Worcestershire sauce, the thin dark brown sauce first made there in the 1830s, used a few drops at a time in soups, in meat dishes, and in a Bloody Mary. In Taiwan you will see the same kind of sauce on shelves as 伍斯特醬 or, in its local form, 烏醋-like sauces, though these are not the same thing. Again the sound is the whole lesson. It is said "WUSS-ter-sher" or, more casually, "WUSS-ter-sher" shortened almost to "WUSS-ter-shuh" — three beats, not four or five. Native speakers themselves joke about how hard the name is to say, and many just say "Worcester sauce", dropping the -shire in speech while still writing it in full on the bottle.
