This is a racial slur, and the entry exists so you can recognise it, not so you can use it. In British English it is a very offensive word for a black person, and by extension for anyone with dark skin — it was thrown at people from Africa, the Caribbean, India and the Arab world during the days of the British Empire, and the ugly old phrase "the wogs begin at Calais" shows how wide and how contemptuous it was. In Australia the target shifted: there it was aimed mainly at southern European immigrants, Greeks and Italians in particular. A small twist worth knowing, because it confuses who meet the word in Australian films or comedy: some Australians of Greek and Italian background took the word back and now use it about themselves, half-proudly, the way other groups have reclaimed slurs. That is an inside use. It does not make the word safe for you. Coming from outside the group, in Britain especially, it lands as one of the harshest things you can say. Know it, understand it when you read it in a novel or hear it in an old film, and never say it yourself.

組成The origin is not settled. It was first written down in 1929 in a book of sailors' slang, and the most common explanation is that it is a shortening of golliwog, the name of a black-faced doll in an 1895 children's book. The popular story that it stands for "Westernized Oriental Gentleman" is a folk etymology invented later — acronym stories like that almost always are.
