A wiper is the long arm with a rubber blade on a car that swings across the front window and pushes the rain away so the driver can see. Most cars have two, so people usually talk about them in the plural: Put your wipers on. Turn the wipers up — it's really coming down now. The full name is wiper in British English and windshield wiper in American English, but in everyday speech people almost always it to wipers. Useful related words: the black rubber strip that touches the glass is the wiper blade, and it is the part you replace when the wipers start smearing or ; the stick behind the steering wheel that controls them is the wiper stalk or wiper lever. The word is completely ordinary — a mechanic, a driver, and a child all use the same word. It comes from the verb wipe, and it can in principle name anything or anyone that wipes, but on its own, unless the situation says otherwise, wiper means the thing on the car.
