A wino is a person who drinks cheap alcohol all day and has nowhere to live — someone you might see sleeping in a doorway or in a park with a bottle. The word points at a poor street drinker, not at a rich person who drinks too much wine at dinner; that person would be called a heavy drinker or an alcoholic. Two important things about this word. One, it is rude. It is not a neutral name for a person with a drinking problem — it is what people say when they look down on someone. You would never use it to a person's face, and a caring speaker would say a homeless man or someone struggling with alcohol instead. Two, it is old-sounding slang, more common in older films, older books, and in the speech of older people than in careful writing today. It is worth knowing because you will meet it when you read or watch things, but it is not a word to reach for yourself. Note also that the alcohol is not really the point — a wino may be drinking anything cheap and strong. Wine is just in the name.
