Winnipeg is a city in Canada — the capital of the province of Manitoba, and the biggest city there, with about three quarters of a million people. It sits almost exactly in the middle of the country, on flat prairie land where two rivers meet, far from any coast. Two things everyone associates with it. One is the cold: Winnipeg winters are famously brutal, well below freezing for months, and one windy downtown corner is nicknamed the coldest street corner in Canada. The other is Winnie-the-Pooh: a real bear cub bought by a Canadian soldier from Winnipeg was named Winnie after his home city, ended up in London Zoo, and a boy named Christopher Robin loved her — which is where the bear in the books got its name. So a Taiwanese student already knows a piece of this city without realising it. As a proper noun it takes no 'the' and no article: 'in Winnipeg', not 'in the Winnipeg'. Lake Winnipeg, a very large lake, sits to the north of the city and shares the name.
