Winnings is the money you have won — from gambling, a bet, a card game, a lottery, a race, or a prize competition. Three things about it matter. First, it is always plural in form: winnings, never 'a winning'. Second, it takes a plural verb: 'his winnings were spent in a week', not 'was'. Third, and this is the part miss, it means money specifically, not the fact of winning and not a trophy. If you won a medal, those are not your winnings. The word feels most at home around gambling and betting — the racetrack, the casino, poker — and carries a faint sense of money that came easily and may go the same way. Common phrases: collect your winnings, count your winnings, blow your winnings (spend them all quickly). Compare 'earnings', which is money you worked for; the pair 'winnings' and 'earnings' are built the same way but the feeling is opposite.
