A windjammer is a big sailing ship of the kind that carried cargo across oceans in the nineteenth century and the early twentieth — tall iron or steel ships with several masts and huge sails, built to move grain, coal, or wool over very long distances as cheaply as possible. They were the last generation of working sailing ships, and they were in a losing race against steam. That history is inside the word: it started as an insult. Sailors on the new steamships used 'windjammer' to look down on the men still working under sail, and only later did it settle into a neutral, even romantic, name for the ships themselves. Today the word is historical or touristy. You meet it in books about the sea, in museums, and in the names of holiday cruises on old-style sailing ships — 'a windjammer cruise' means a holiday on a tall ship, not on an ordinary boat. Nobody uses it for a modern yacht.
