You can picture everything living in a forest or a river with nobody feeding it, fencing it, or watering it — birds, deer, fish, insects, the trees and grass too. Wildlife is that whole living side of a place, taken as one thing. It has no plural and takes no a: you say a lot of wildlife, never a wildlife.
