Fauna means all the animals that live in one place, or that lived in one stretch of time — the birds, bugs, fish, and the rest, taken together as a group. Scientists say things like "the fauna of Taiwan" or "Ice Age fauna." You will often see it next to flora, which is the same idea but for plants. Though actually, in everyday talk people sometimes stretch fauna to mean just "wildlife," a little loosely. It still feels like a school or science word, not a kitchen-table word. It is the whole set, not one creature.
