Wide-ranging describes something that covers many different subjects, areas or kinds of people rather than staying on one. A wide-ranging discussion wanders across many topics; wide-ranging powers let someone act in many different situations; a wide-ranging survey asks many kinds of people. The key idea is breadth, not size and not depth — in fact it quietly suggests the opposite of depth, and a reader will often hear "it touched many things, none of them for long". It belongs to careful, fairly formal writing: news reports, official reviews, reports of interviews and meetings. Journalists reach for it constantly to describe an interview that had no single subject. It sits before a noun ("a wide-ranging review") and also after be ("the changes are wide-ranging"). It has no comparative form that sounds good — write "broader" rather than "more wide-ranging" if you can. Keep the when it comes before a noun.
