You can picture whose as a label that ties a thing to its owner: it answers the question 'this belongs to which person?' Whatever follows whose is the thing owned, and whose points back to the person it belongs to. The same little word does this whether you are asking the question, or just quietly telling someone which person the thing belongs to.
