- 1
Food that has not been messed with much — kept close to how it comes from the plant or the ground, with nothing artificial added and nothing stripped out. Brown rice rather than white, whole beans rather than a processed protein bar, fruit rather than fruit-flavoured drink. The word carries an , healthy-living flavour, and it belongs to a particular world: health shops, vegetarian cafés, food writing. It is more common in Britain than in America, where you are more likely to hear 'whole foods' as two words, and where it is also a famous supermarket name. You will see it used for the food itself ('a diet based on wholefoods') and in front of other nouns ('a wholefood shop', 'wholefood cooking'). Be a little careful with it: there is no legal definition, so a shop can put 'wholefood' on a label fairly freely. It is a general attitude to food more than a precise category.
全食物、天然食品(未精製、未加工的食材,如糙米、全穀類)
組成whole + food — food kept whole, not broken down and rebuilt. The 'whole' here is doing the same work as in wholemeal and wholegrain: nothing taken away.
同家族的字
- wholemealsame 'whole' meaning nothing removed from the grain
- wholegrainsame 'whole': the entire grain kept
