In stories, a werewolf is a person who turns into a wolf — usually when the moon is full — and then turns back into a person afterwards. While in wolf form they are dangerous and cannot control themselves, and in many versions of the story they remember little or nothing about it. Two ideas travel with the word: silver, because in the old tales only a silver bullet can kill a werewolf, and biting, because a person bitten by one becomes one. The plural is 'werewolves', with -ves. The word is at home in horror films, fantasy novels and games, and it is also the name of a well-known party game (called 'Werewolf' or 'Mafia') where hidden werewolves among the players are voted out one by one. In everyday talk people sometimes use it lightly and jokingly, for someone who becomes a completely different, wilder person at night or under stress. Pronunciation varies: both 'WEAR-wolf' and 'WEER-wolf' are heard, and both are accepted.

From Old English werewulf, from *wer 'man' + *wulf 'wolf'.

組成were- + wolf. The 'were' part is an old English word for 'man' (a human being, a male person), so a werewolf is literally a man-wolf. That old word 'were' has died out on its own and survives almost only inside this one word.
