In boxing, fighters are put into weight classes so that people of similar size fight each other. A welterweight is a boxer in the class with an upper limit of about 66.68 kg (147 pounds) — heavier than a lightweight, lighter than a middleweight. The word works two ways: as a noun for the boxer ('he was a welterweight'), and before another noun for the class or the fight ('the welterweight title', 'the welterweight division'). The same class names are used in other combat sports too, such as wrestling, kickboxing and MMA, though the exact weight limit differs from sport to sport. Outside sport, people sometimes borrow these boxing words to talk about size or importance in general — calling a company or a politician 'a middleweight' or 'a heavyweight' — but 'welterweight' is used this way much less than 'heavyweight' is.
