The everyday short word for a wellington — a tall rubber rain boot. This is what British and Irish people actually say; 'wellington boot' is what the label says. Almost always plural, 'wellies', because you wear a pair: 'put your wellies on', 'muddy wellies by the door'. The spelling wobbles a little — 'welly' and 'wellie' both appear, and the plural is 'wellies' either way. It sounds friendly and slightly childlike, the word a parent uses with a child, so it does not fit a formal report. There is a second, quite separate British slang use: 'give it some welly' means put more power or effort into something — pressing the accelerator harder, singing louder, pushing harder on a stuck door. That one is spoken only, and mostly heard from British men of a certain age. Outside Britain and Ireland, many English speakers will not know either use.
