WBC stands for the World Boxing Council. Like the WBA, it is one of the four big organizations that control professional boxing — it ranks fighters, sanctions title fights, and gives out its own belt. It was formed in 1963, when a group of countries broke away because they felt the WBA was too American, and it is based in Mexico City. Its green-and-gold belt is probably the most famous belt in boxing; many fighters say it is the one they dreamed of as children, even though on paper the four belts are equal. The WBC has also pushed a lot of the safety changes in boxing — shortening championship fights from fifteen rounds to twelve, for example, after a boxer died in 1982. Note that these three letters stand for other things too, depending on where you meet them: in a hospital report WBC means white blood cell, and in baseball it means the World Baseball Classic, which Taiwan follows closely. Here we mean the boxing one. Context tells you which: on a sports page next to a boxer's name it is boxing; in a blood test result it is your white blood cells.
