WBA stands for the World Boxing Association. It is one of the big organizations that runs professional boxing — it makes the rules for its own title fights, ranks boxers, and decides who gets to fight for its belt. When a boxer wins a WBA title fight, people call that boxer a world champion. Here is the messy part: boxing does not have one single world champion the way most sports do. There are four main organizations — the WBA, the WBC, the IBF and the WBO — and each one has its own belt and its own champion. So at any time there can be four different 'world champions' in the same weight class. A boxer who beats all four and holds every belt at once is called 'undisputed', and that is rare and a very big deal. The WBA is the oldest of the four; it began in the United States in 1921 under a different name and became the WBA in 1962. It has also been the most confusing one, because for years it named more than one champion in the same weight class at the same time — a 'super champion' and a 'regular champion' — which even boxing fans complain about. In writing you almost always see it as three letters, said one by one: W-B-A. It is usually used before another word, like 'the WBA title', 'the WBA champion', 'the WBA belt'.
