The quality of being wayward — the noun for that habit of not doing what you are told and going your own way instead. You use it when you want to name the behaviour as a whole rather than describe one person: 'his waywardness worried his teachers', 'a streak of waywardness'. Notice how it is usually built into a sentence: someone has waywardness, shows waywardness, or is punished for their waywardness. It is uncountable — no 'a waywardness', no 'waywardnesses'. The tone is thoughtful and a bit literary, the sort of word that appears in a biography, a school report from fifty years ago, or a novel; it puts a small distance between the speaker and the behaviour, which can sound kind (you are describing a tendency, not attacking a person) or slightly cold, depending on the sentence. It carries the same gentle sadness as the adjective: the picture is of energy going in the wrong direction, not of cruelty. And like the adjective, it can be used about things and about art — 'the waywardness of the weather that spring', 'a certain waywardness in her early poems' — where it means unpredictability, and can even be a compliment.
