A washbasin is the bowl fixed to the wall of a bathroom where you wash your hands and face and clean your teeth — with a tap above it and a hole at the bottom for the water to run away. It is the small one, not the big one in the kitchen where you wash dishes, and not the bath. This is mainly British English; Americans nearly always say "sink", and British people say "sink" a lot too in ordinary talk, so "washbasin" can sound slightly formal or careful — the word you meet on a hotel website, an estate agent's list of rooms, or a plumbing catalogue. Older British speakers may say "washhand basin", and "basin" on its own is common in Britain when the bathroom is already understood. In writing it appears as one word, and sometimes as two: "wash basin".
