Think of heat moving into something that was cold, and the reading going up while you watch. That is the picture in warming: not heat that is already there, but heat arriving. A bowl of soup does it to a person, the sun does it to an ocean, and English will let two people do it to each other.

From the word’s history

Wiktionary records warming as warm plus -ing, going back through Middle English warmyng to Old English wærming. The ending is what turns the change into a thing you can name, count and measure.

所以 the warming of the ocean 字面上就是「海洋變暖這件事」。

Wiktionary (kaikki extract, source_ref kaikki:3f6f69a190036ae4:898108464): "From Middle English warmyng, warmynge, from Old English wærming, wirming, equivalent to warm + -ing."
