A walrus is a very large sea animal that lives in the cold seas around the North Pole. It has thick grey-brown skin, whiskers on its face, flippers instead of legs, and two long white coming down from the top of its mouth. It is heavy — much heavier than a person, often over a tonne — and it moves slowly and clumsily on land but swims well. It uses the to pull itself up out of the water onto ice and to fight other males. Walruses lie together in big groups on the ice or on beaches. The plural is usually walruses; you will also see walrus used for the plural, the way people say "deer", but walruses is safer. The word turns up in two other places English speakers know well: a "walrus " is a thick that hangs down at both sides, like the animal's whiskers, and "I Am the Walrus" is a famous Beatles song, which is why the animal is oddly well known in pop culture.
組成Probably from Dutch walrus, put together from wal (whale) + ros (horse) — so, "whale-horse". Old English had its own word for it built the same way round, horshwæl, "horse-whale", and the borrowed Dutch word pushed it out.
