The sport itself: you stand sideways on a short wide board with your feet strapped in, hold a rope behind a fast motorboat, and get pulled across the water. The fun part is the wake — the two lines of raised water the boat pushes out behind it. Riders cut across it and use it as a jump, so wakeboarding is full of tricks, spins and flips, not just gliding along. It grew out of water-skiing in the 1980s, and people often describe it as snowboarding on water, which is a fair picture. The word is a noun, and it behaves like other sport nouns: you go wakeboarding, you try wakeboarding, wakeboarding is expensive. In Taiwan you will hear about it at places like 大鵬灣 or at cable parks, where instead of a boat, an overhead cable pulls you around a lake — that is still wakeboarding.
