The quality of being playfully joking; a habit of light teasing humour. This is the noun of waggish, so it names the thing itself rather than describing a person. You use it for a person's general character ('his waggishness made meetings bearable'), or for the joking flavour of a piece of writing or a performance ('there is a gentle waggishness in her poems'). It is uncountable — you have some waggishness, not two waggishnesses. Of the whole waggish family this one is the rarest and the most bookish; you would mostly find it in a review, an obituary, or an essay about someone's personality. Ordinary speakers would say 'his sense of humour' or 'he was always joking'. Because the word is a little grand for a small idea, writers sometimes use it with a smile, as a slightly pompous word for messing about.
