- 1薄如紙、極薄；用在選票或利潤時是「極其微小的（差距／利潤）」。台灣說「薄如蟬翼」也可以，但那偏文雅；口語就說「超薄」。注意 wafer 本身是「威化餅／薄餅乾」，不是「晶圓」的意思在這裡——雖然半導體的「晶圓」英文正是 wafer，同樣是取「很薄的圓片」這個意象。
Extremely thin — so thin it is almost see-through. A wafer is a very thin, flat, crisp (the kind you get with ice cream, or the thin round bread used in a Christian church service), so calling something wafer-thin means 'as thin as one of those'. You use it for real physical things: wafer-thin slices of ham, a wafer-thin phone, a wafer-thin layer of chocolate. It sounds slightly when the thinness is clever (a wafer-thin laptop) and slightly complaining when you feel cheated (wafer-thin slices of beef in an expensive sandwich). It is also very common in a stretched, non-physical way, for something that is only just enough: a wafer-thin majority in an election, a wafer-thin profit margin, a wafer-thin lead in a game. That stretched use is now probably the one you meet most often in news writing. It is always written with a before a noun, and it stays after 'be' too — 'the walls are wafer-thin'. It is an adjective only; there is no verb and no adverb.
