1. 1

To spoil something good by making it cheap, coarse, or low in quality. You vulgarize a poem, a ceremony, a piece of music, a beautiful place — usually by making it loud, simple, or commercial so it will sell. The word contains a judgement, and it is a strong one; the speaker is saying that something fine has been dragged down. It is formal and mostly written, so in ordinary talk people say 'cheapen', 'ruin', or 'dumb down' instead. As with the noun, there is an older use meaning 'put hard ideas into everyday words for ordinary readers', with no insult at all — but today most English readers will hear the negative sense first, so use 'popularize' or 'simplify' when you mean the kind version. British spelling: 'vulgarise'.
