To make rubber stronger by heating it with sulphur. It is a verb, and it is almost always done to rubber — you vulcanize rubber, and the rubber is then 'vulcanized'. You will in fact meet the past participle far more often than the plain verb: 'vulcanized rubber' is the everyday phrase, printed on products and in textbooks. Before this treatment, rubber melts in the heat and cracks in the cold; after it, the material keeps its shape and springs back. Tyre shops also use the word for repairing: to 'vulcanize' a patch onto a tyre means to bond it on with heat rather than just glue it. This is workshop and science language, not conversation. British spelling is 'vulcanise'.
