A British charity that sends people to poorer countries to live and work there, usually for two years or more. The people it sends are not tourists and not soldiers — they are teachers, nurses, engineers, farmers, and so on, who work alongside local people and pass on what they know. The name stands for Voluntary Service Overseas. It started in 1958, and for a long time British people thought of it the way Americans think of the Peace Corps. The word 'voluntary' here does not mean the workers get nothing at all; they usually get somewhere to live and a small amount of money to live on, but not a real salary. In recent years the organisation has said its main job is to help local people build their own skills rather than to send British people in to do the work, so you may see it described in newer, more careful language. In everyday British speech you will hear things like 'she did VSO in Nepal' — used as if it were the name of an experience, not just an organisation.
