vol. is the short written form of volume, used when a long work comes in several separate books. A dictionary, an encyclopedia, a manga series, a set of collected letters, or an academic journal may run to many volumes, and instead of writing the whole word each time, people write vol. 1, vol. 2, and so on. The dot is part of the abbreviation — it marks that letters have been cut off — and it is normally kept. The plural is usually vols. ("a set in 12 vols."). You see it almost only in writing: on book spines, in library catalogues, in footnotes and reference lists, in shop listings for comics. When you read the sentence out loud you say the full word, "volume one" — nobody says "vol one" except very casually. Capitalisation follows the style of the list you are in: Vol. 3 with a capital V is common at the start of a title or on a cover, vol. 3 lower-case inside a sentence. Be aware that in other places the same three letters stand for quite different things — volunteer, volume as in loudness, even "" on some old labels — so the meaning here is the one about books and parts of a work.

組成A clipping of the word volume, cut after the first three letters, with a full stop marking the cut. Volume itself came into English from Latin volumen, "a roll" — an ancient book was a rolled-up scroll, so one "roll" was one part of a long work. That old sense of rolling is why the same word later came to mean the space a thing takes up.
