Voile is a very light, very thin cloth that you can almost see through. It can be made of cotton, wool, or silk. Hold a piece up to the window and the light comes straight through it, but you cannot see the world outside clearly — it softens everything. It is a technical word from the world of sewing and curtains rather than an everyday one. The two places you will actually meet it: net curtains at a window (very common in shops selling home things — 'voile curtains'), and light summer dresses, blouses, and scarves. As a material word it is uncountable — you say 'made of voile', 'a metre of voile', not 'a voile'. But shops selling curtains often break this rule and say 'voiles' for the curtains themselves. A note on saying it: it is French, and English keeps the French sound — VOYL, rhyming with 'oil' with a v in front. Not 'VOY-lay' and not the same as the exclamation voilà, which is a different word that just happens to look similar.
