A voice-over is a voice you hear in a film, a TV programme, or an advert, spoken by someone you cannot see on the screen. The camera shows a beach, a product, a crowd of people — and a voice explains, or tells the story, or sells you something. It covers several familiar things: the narrator of a documentary; the voice at the end of an advert saying the shop's name; a character's thoughts spoken aloud while we watch their face; and the translated voice laid over a foreign speaker in the news. The word works three ways in practice: - the spoken words themselves — 'The voice-over explains the history.' - the job or skill — 'She does voice-over work for commercials.' - as a verb, to voice-over something = to record that voice for it. Writing note, and this is the part that trips people up: the spelling is unsettled. You will see voice-over, voiceover, and voice over all in print, from good publishers. The hyphen is the safest choice for the noun. One distinction worth having: a voice-over is not the same as dubbing. In dubbing (配音) the original voice is removed and replaced, and the new voice tries to match the lips. In a voice-over the original sound usually stays underneath, quieter, and the new voice sits on top — which is exactly what 'over' means here.
