    In British university English, a viva is a spoken exam, usually where a student must defend their thesis by answering questions out loud in front of examiners - short for the Latin phrase 'viva voce,' meaning 'with a living voice.' Separately, 'Viva!' is also shouted as an meaning 'long live -!', borrowed from Italian and Spanish, as in 'Viva Las Vegas.'
