Visualization is the noun for visualizing — making a picture of something in your mind, or the picture itself. 'Her visualization of the house was so clear she could count the windows.' It has two lives, and they are worth keeping apart. The first is mental. In sport and in therapy, visualization is a practised technique: an athlete lies down and runs the whole race in their head before running it for real; a nervous speaker imagines walking to the front and it going well. Coaches, counsellors and self-help books use the word constantly, and here it is close to 'guided imagining'. The second is on a screen or a page. Data visualization means turning numbers into something you can see — a chart, a map, a diagram. This use has grown enormously with computers, and in tech and business it is now the more common meaning. If someone at work says 'we need a better visualization', they mean a graph, not a daydream. Spelling: -zation in American English, and -sation (visualisation) is normal in British writing. Both are correct in their own place.
