A vine is a plant that grows long, climbing or trailing stems instead of standing up straight on its own — it climbs walls, fences, or other plants to reach the light. The most familiar vine to most people is the grapevine, the plant that grapes grow on, which is why 'vine' often makes people think of vineyards and wine. Any plant with this climbing habit — like some beans, or ivy — can also be called a vine.
