Vim means lively energy — the bounce and force a person brings to what they are doing. If you clean the kitchen with vim, you are not dragging yourself around; you are moving fast, scrubbing hard, maybe humming. It is about spirit as much as strength. Two things to know about how it is really used. First, it almost never travels alone. Nine times out of ten it appears in the fixed phrase "vim and " (American spelling: ), and outside that phrase it can sound odd. Second, it is old-fashioned and slightly playful. It belongs to the voice of a , or an old advertisement, or someone being cheerful on purpose. A young person describing their friend would say energy, or say she is full of life; they would not say vim unless they were being a little funny. It is an uncountable noun, so there is no "a vim" and no "vims" — you have vim, or you are full of vim. One more thing worth knowing, since students meet it on computers: Vim is also the name of a well-known text editor used by programmers. That name is not this word at all — it stands for "Vi ". If you search this word online, that is mostly what you will find.
組成Possibly from Latin vim, the accusative form of vīs, meaning "force, power, strength" — and in New Latin, "energy". But scholars are not certain: it may instead be a modern invented word, made up because the short sharp sound feels energetic. So treat the Latin story as likely, not proven.
