    A vidder is a person who makes fan videos — someone who takes small clips from existing films, TV shows or music videos and cuts them together, usually over a song, to make something new. The word comes out of fan communities, where this kind of editing has been a hobby and an art form for decades, long before YouTube. A vidder is not a filmmaker in the ordinary sense: they shoot nothing. Everything on screen is borrowed footage, and the skill is in the choosing and the timing — which half-second of a character's face lands on which beat of the song. Good vidders use that to tell a story the original show did not tell, or to argue about a character, or to make two shows meet. The word belongs to a particular world. Inside fan communities it is everyday and respectful; outside them, most people would say 'video editor' or 'fan video maker' and would not recognise vidder at all. It is informal, and it is written far more than it is spoken.
