Victimhood is the state of being a victim — of being the one who was hurt, cheated, or treated badly by someone else. English adds -hood to a word when it wants to name a condition you are in rather than a thing you do: childhood is the state of being a child, so victimhood is the state of being a victim.

Used plainly, it is neutral and even gentle. A doctor or a social worker may write about "the long effects of victimhood" and mean only that being hurt leaves marks on a person, which is simply true.

But you should know how the word usually behaves in the news, because this is where students get caught. Very often it appears in a sour phrase: "a culture of victimhood", "a sense of victimhood", "playing the victim". Here the speaker is not describing someone's suffering — they are attacking it. They are saying this person or group leans on the idea of being hurt, makes it their whole identity, and uses it to get sympathy or to avoid blame. That is an accusation, and often an unfair one.

So the word has become a kind of quiet weapon. Two writers can use "victimhood" about the same people and mean opposite things — one meaning "they were genuinely harmed", the other meaning "they are pretending, or making too much of it". You cannot tell which from the word alone; you have to read what surrounds it.

It is a formal word, written more than spoken, and it is uncountable — no "a victimhood", no "victimhoods".
