A small state in the far northeast of the United States, in the region called New England, sitting between New York State and New Hampshire, with Canada above it. It is one of the least crowded states — more cows, forest and hills than cities — and its capital, Montpelier, is the smallest state capital in the country. Its biggest town is Burlington, on Lake Champlain. What people picture when they hear the name: maple syrup (Vermont makes more than any other state), dairy farms and cheese, red barns, and above all the autumn leaves, which draw crowds of visitors every October. In winter people come to ski. Politically it has a reputation for being independent-minded and rather left-leaning for a rural place. The people are called Vermonters. As a proper noun it takes a capital V, no 'the', and the usual preposition is in: 'in Vermont', 'from Vermont', 'a farm in Vermont'. You will also meet it as a modifier — Vermont cheddar, Vermont maple syrup — where it works as a mark of quality on a food label.
