Verdigris is the blue-green crust that forms on copper, brass and bronze when air and damp work on the metal over time. The Statue of Liberty is the famous example: it was built the brown colour of a coin and turned that soft green through years of weather. You will meet the word in three kinds of places. Artists and conservators use it for the colour and for an old pigment made from copper. Builders and antique dealers use it for what has happened to a roof, a , an old coin, a church bell. And writers use it for the colour itself, because it names a very particular green — dusty, pale, slightly blue — that plain "green" cannot. It is an uncountable noun, so you say some verdigris, a layer of verdigris, covered in verdigris; never "a verdigris." It is sometimes also used as a verb meaning to become covered in it, but that is rare. Say it roughly "VER-di-grees" or "VER-di-gris"; both are heard.
