Velveteen is a cloth made to look like velvet but woven from cotton, with a shorter, denser, less shiny surface — and a much smaller price. Real velvet was traditionally silk; velveteen was how ordinary families got the look. It has no stretch, unlike velour. You meet it most in children's clothes, in soft toys, in old-fashioned jackets and in curtains, and it has a slightly homely, nineteenth-century feeling.
