1. 1

Velveteen is a cloth made to look like velvet but woven from cotton, with a shorter, denser, less shiny surface — and a much smaller price. Real velvet was traditionally silk; velveteen was how ordinary families got the look. It has no stretch, unlike velour. You meet it most in children's clothes, in soft toys, in old-fashioned jackets and in curtains, and it has a slightly , nineteenth-century feeling. For most English readers the word arrives attached to one book: The Velveteen Rabbit, a famous 1922 children's story about a toy rabbit that becomes real because a child loves it — so the word can quietly carry ideas of childhood, worn toys, and something humble that turns out to matter. It is a fairly rare word in everyday speech now; you are more likely to read it than hear it. Uncountable as a noun, and common in front of another noun: a velveteen jacket.

組成velvet + -een. The ending -een is an old way of making the name of a cloth or an imitation of one, so velveteen is literally 'velvet-ish stuff'. Through velvet it goes back to Latin villus, 'shaggy hair'.
