The **veldt** is the wide, flat, open grassland of southern Africa — mostly South Africa, but also parts of Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia. Grass as far as you can see, very few trees, big sky. It is the landscape of that region the way *prairie* is North America's and *steppe* is Central Asia's. How the word behaves: - It usually takes **the**: *out on the veldt*, *across the veldt*. It names a whole known landscape, not one field. - It is spelled two ways. **Veld** (one *d*, no *t*) is the standard South African spelling and what you will see in South African writing. **Veldt** is the older British spelling, and it is the one that shows up in adventure novels, in older dictionaries, and in most learner's dictionaries. Both are correct; if you are writing about South Africa today, *veld* is safer. - South Africans themselves split it up: the **highveld** (the high plateau around Johannesburg), the **lowveld** (the hotter, lower country toward Mozambique), the **bushveld** (grassland with scattered trees and shrubs). If you ever read about South Africa, these compounds appear constantly. Register: geographical and literary. Outside writing about Africa, you will not meet it. When it does appear, it usually carries a feeling of emptiness, distance, heat, and wild animals — Kipling and safari books used it heavily, and it still smells faintly of that. It came into English from Afrikaans, the Dutch-descended language of South Africa, where it simply means "field."
