Someone whose job is to say how much something is worth. A valuer looks at a house, a painting, a piece of land, a company or a collection of jewellery and puts a price on it, usually in a written report that a bank, an insurance company or a court will trust. This is a British, Australian and New Zealand word. In American English the usual word is appraiser, and the report is an appraisal rather than a valuation. Where property is concerned the job is very specific: before a bank lends you money for a house, a valuer visits and decides what the house is really worth, and that number can decide whether you get the loan. So the word carries a feeling of official judgement, not opinion.
