- 1n/ˈviː saɪn/victory/peace signV
A hand sign made by holding up the first two fingers in a V shape, with the front of your hand facing forwards. In World War II it stood for victory, and from the 1960s and 1970s used it to mean peace.

Two things make this sign what it is: the two fingers, and which way the hand faces. Here the palm points out, towards the person looking at you. That is the friendly version. It was a victory sign during the Second World War, then it was picked up again in the 1960s and 1970s and used to mean peace, and people still make it in photographs today. In American English many speakers simply call it the peace sign, and you will hear that name more often than V-sign.

In British English, a rude hand sign that shows you are angry with someone or do not like them: the same two fingers held up, but with the back of your hand facing the person you are insulting.
The fingers are the same; the hand is turned round. With the back of the hand towards the other person, this is an insult in Britain and in some other places where British English is spoken. It is rude enough that people are taken off television for it and players can be fined for showing it to a crowd. A learner most often meets it as something to recognise rather than use, and it matters mainly because the friendly palm-out sign is only a wrist-turn away.
