Utmost means the greatest possible amount or the highest degree of something - you can't get more than 'utmost'. You'll see it in fairly formal phrases: something is 'of the utmost importance' (extremely important), or you 'do your utmost' to help someone (you try as hard as you possibly can). It's a word that adds weight and seriousness to a sentence.
